Lover’s eye paintings are miniature portraits that depict a single eye, often framed in jewelry such as brooches, lockets, or rings. These unique pieces became popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Europe.

In 1784, while still a prince, George secretly commissioned a miniature painting of his own eye to give to his mistress, who at the time, was a cause of controversy. To avoid scandal, they kept their love discreet, and the single-eye portrait allowed them to keep each other close without revealing the full identity. This sparked a trend among the aristocracy, where lovers would exchange eye portraits as a symbol of their secret love, but they also may have been exchanged between family members and friends.

I find Lover’s Eye paintings deeply inspiring, there’s something so captivating about how these small portraits convey so much feeling in a single look.
